The growth of women’s football is seemingly unstoppable.
Tangible success at the very top of the game, in the form of England’s back-to-back European titles, has proven to be a lightning rod of inspiration. According to England Football, the heroics of The Lionesses in the summer of 2025 lead to a 196% increase in searches for female football playing opportunities. Participation levels subsequently increased by 5% and the number of female coaches and referees rose by considerable amounts. Crucially, targets for creating more opportunities for girls to play football in schools were met years ahead of schedule, a 31% increase since 2020/21.
Underpinning all these statistics are grassroots clubs providing the opportunities and putting in the often-unheralded hard work. Success at the elite level and even access in schools only goes so far if there aren’t local groups and individuals giving their time, but as the interest in the game has boomed teams up and down the country have stepped up and answered the call.
One such club are Middlesbrough Girls FC.
A team for the region
Formed in 2023 and based in the northeast, the team are one of the only all-female clubs in the region with age categories ranging from under 7s to under 17s. This year, a senior women’s team was formed adding another string to the club’s bow.
The club’s ethos, as described by team secretary Michael Bond, is as simple as it is important:
“We believe every girl or woman in the area should have the same access to football as males regardless of age or ability.”
With the aforementioned introduction of the senior women’s first team and other developments since the end of 2025, it’s clear that the club are not just talking the talk but walking it too linking up with local schools to help share the beautiful game to more girls. Bond goes on to say:
“Since we have taken over the club in December 2025 we have introduced our senior women’s first team and an introductory wildcats session for beginners in football from ages 5-10. We have also linked up with local schools and provided 4 weeks of free football sessions for girls Y1-Y6.”
Pride in the kits
But what about the kits? Well, with a name like Middlesbrough Girls you would expect the team to look like their namesakes. Sure enough the team are decked out in red and white kits for all age categories and as Bond explains it is a point of pride that the team look good at all levels. From a practical perspective, quality, affordable kits also open the door to more opportunities from a sponsorship perspective:
“We pride ourselves on our kit, the saying "Look good, feel good" resonates with us and we aim to provide first class kits to all of our teams while keeping costs as low as possible to encourage sponsors to get involved and have their logo on the front of one of our shirts.”
The job of getting well over 100 kits produced and ready for the new season would be a daunting one for any club, but as a proud partner of Teamkits Powered By DCD Teamwear Boro Girls are able to rest easy.
“Working with DCD and TEAMKITS takes a lot of stress out of organizing kits especially when there is over 130 to arrange at the beginning of each season.”
